Sandvik 14C28N
14C28N steel, also known as Sandvik 14C28N steel, is a stainless steel produced by the European steel company Sandvik in Sweden. It is an improved 12C27 and 13C26 steel, which was originally used to make razor blades. The 14C28N steel has the best toughness among knife steels and is a favorite of most knife enthusiasts. 14C28N steel also offers excellent hardness and corrosion resistance, which is related to the nitrogen content of its composition. In most other types of steel, carbon is added to increase hardness. This steel is easy to machine, which reduces production costs and therefore the affordability of the final products, in our case knives. If you're looking for a top quality knife at an affordable price, check out 14C28N steel knives. The prices of these knives are not as low as the lower end knives, but you are assured of premium performance at affordable prices. The hardness of the steel determines most of its other properties. 14C28N steel can be hardened to hardness ranging from 55-62 HRC.
Compared to the Japanese VG-10 stainless steel - which you know very well from our damascus knives - VG-10 will offer better edge retention than 14C28N stainless steel. The better edge retention is attributed to the high amount of carbon that contributes to the high carbide volume compared to 14C28N steel. Sandvik 14C28N steel outperforms VG-10 steel in toughness due to its low impurity count and its developmental manufacturing process.
